I’m nervous about seeing a counselor. What will it be like?
I certainly understand that counseling can be a little scary to jump into and you want to connect with a counselor that’s a good match for you. In our first session, we talk about what issues and symptoms you’re dealing with and set some goals for therapy. We can move at your pace, there is never any pressure to tell your whole life story and all your “secrets” in our first session, or our 2nd, or our 3rd. Our session can be a balance between you talking about what’s troubling you and your counselor sharing new ways to cope and techniques to try.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
Getting support from your family and friends is extremely valuable, but sometimes we need more then a listening ear. A counselor can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself.
Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. Your privacy is guaranteed by law and ethical codes.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all issues. It can only treat symptoms. Our sessions are designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies to help you accomplish your personal goals.
Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy.
